The star-studded new film "Certain Women" showcases three of America's greatest female actors. NY1's George Whipple got a chance to talk to all three of them at the film's Lincoln Center premiere, and he filed this report.
Direct from critical acclaim at this year's Sundance Film Festival, "Certain Women" premiered at the 54th New York Film Festival.
The movie is three separate stories that subtly intersect, set in Montana. Kristen Stewart plays a substitute night school teacher.
"These women are all on a grind. They're all fighting for something very quietly. Is this very quiet struggle. They all want something they can't have," Stewart said.
Laura Dern plays a lawyer in the film.
"Once the case is closed, the case is closed, and to have to detach from a client you've grown so close to who's lost, I would imagine for a compassionate lawyer it could be devastating. And, to learn how to detach and discern was unpleasant as an actor to live in those shoes," Dern said.
Michelle William's character is in a challenging marriage.
"She's a woman who's getting stuck with like, the difficult end of everything, the difficult end of parenting," Williams said. "She's essentially working harder and getting less thanks than her male counterpart."
"Certain Women" is among many films that have been directed by or emphasized great roles for women at the 54th New York Film Festival.
