Queens Rep. Gregory Meeks voiced strong confidence Monday in Vice President Kamala Harris’ ability to lead the nation and defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election.

In an appearance on “Mornings On 1” a day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, Meeks, a Democrat representing parts of southern Queens, endorsed Harris as the Democratic Party nominee.

“The vice president — soon-to-be president — is going to make sure that Donald Trump does not get away with any of his lies and missteps and what he says,” Meeks said. “She's going to hold him accountable for who he is.”

Meeks highlighted growing enthusiasm for Harris’s potential candidacy, noting that his “phones have been ringing off the hook” with people wanting to volunteer for her campaign.

Meeks added that he has seen strong support coming from women and young voters, similar to former President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, and believes a repeat election is possible.

“I think that turnout is about to happen again. Particularly when you start looking at the battleground states, in places like Michigan and North Carolina and Georgia, and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. It's all fired up there,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Democratic National Convention, which starts Aug. 19, Meeks predicted broader backing for Harris as the presumptive presidential nominee.

“I think that when we get to the convention, you haven't seen anything yet. You’re going to see a united Democratic Party,” Meeks said.

While Harris has yet to select a running mate, Meeks anticipated that whoever joins the ticket will confront Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, head on.

“The vice president, whoever that is, will come in and challenge Vance and expose who he is and what he has done, and what he has represented,” Meeks said.

“I think that we're in for a dynamite ticket, a dynamite Democratic ticket that not only unites Democrats, but brings in the independents and others around the country who do not want go back to those four years of madness when we had Donald Trump as president,” he added.
