Mayor Bill de Blasio is trying to calm down religious groups who are worried about the impact of a Trump presidency.
He met with Jewish and Islamic leaders Friday in Midtown.
Some Muslims have felt targeted by the President-elect because of his campaign pledge to ban members of the religion from entering the country.
The Mayor says some who are Jewish are uneasy because of past displays of anti-Semitism among Trump supporters.
De Blasio says the city will defend them.
"I am deeply troubled and I think there are millions of New Yorkers who are deeply troubled by the results of our national election. So we have to be honest, we have to acknowledge the pain and the fear. But at the same time we have to resolve to be at peace with our own values, confident that our values win the day."
The Mayor says he believes controversial parts of Trump's platform will be met with resistance, and will not be implemented.
