City officials have been working to reduce the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
This year, several measures to tackle the dangers of uncertified batteries have been introduced and passed in the state House and City Council to address the growing threat.
Meanwhile, on the national level, a bipartisan bill that would create a national safety standard has been making its way through Congress.
According to the fire department, as of Monday, there have been 264 lithium-ion-related fires this year, which is a slight increase from the same time last year.
However, both deaths and injuries are down compared to the same time period in 2023.
Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to break this down.
