The City Council held a hearing Tuesday on the city’s shelter limits, which is a policy that was created and implemented by the Adams administration last year.

It limits how long single migrant adults and migrant families with children can stay in city shelters before having to reapply for placement.

The policy is intended to reduce the number of families in the city’s care, but advocates say it has only served to further traumatize migrant children who do not have stable living conditions.

The hearing comes as the city announced Monday that it is loosening restrictions for some families.

Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who serves as the president and CEO of the nonprofit Win, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk more about the shelter stay limit policy.

“What we need to do is help folks get over the trauma they have suffered, and then create the means for them to get into permanent housing,” Quinn said.
