New York City and state officials are considering banning cellphones in the classroom, but questions remain about how such a policy would be enforced.

It’s part of an effort to improve youth mental health by reducing the time they spend in front of screens and on social media, which has been linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety and other mental health problems.

A new book titled “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Re-Wiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness” explores adolescent mental health trends and makes the case for why children need time away from phone screens.

Zach Raush, the book’s chief researcher, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” Friday to discuss the book and more.

He is also an associate research scientist at the NYU-Stern School of Business.
