Education officials are weighing a ban on cell phones in schools.

City Schools Chancellor David Banks last month teased an announcement would come soon, but the city is now taking more time to consider its options.

Meanwhile, Gov. Kathy Hochul is considering a statewide ban on phones in schools and this week launched a listening tour to help hash out the details.

Supporters of a ban say smartphones are a distraction in the classroom and can also fuel fights and exacerbate mental health issues like anxiety and decrease socialization.

David Bloomfield, a professor of Educational Leadership, Law & Policy at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza to discuss more.
