Broadway favorite Krysta Rodriguez is playing dress up, lashes, hair and of course all things Halston in the new Netflix mini-series about the life and career of the late fashion designer. In the show, Rodriguez takes on Halston’s dear friend, celebrated stage and screen star Liza Minnelli. Rodriguez says she was a Liza fan long before signing on to the project.

"As I got to like high school and in my twenties, I discovered 'I Gotcha' and I was, I was so enamored. I used to watch it every morning. I would just like push repeat on it," Rodriguez said.

In "Halston" Rodriguez got to re-create multiple Liza moments, including her favorite "I Gotcha" from "Liza with a Z."

"It was so thrilling to get to work on it, to put that red dress on and those red tights and just really embody that because that again is like at her height," said Rodriguez.

From an iconic star to an iconic setting, New York City from yesteryear serves as the backdrop for the series. Daniel Minahan was at the helm alongside visionary producer Ryan Murphy.

"This is sort of a love letter to New York. Our story takes place during the economic decline in New York and Halston and his friends are just scrapping it out and making, making their clothes and jewelry and kind of creating this zeitgeist together," said Minahan.

One of the things Minahan and his team were tasked with was re-creating one-time notable hotspot Studio 54, which on screen, is actually another well-known New York venue in disguise.

"We had hoped to shoot in the real studio, which was closed obviously during lockdown. And we weren't able to, we ended up going to a place called the Hammerstein Ballroom and dressing it," Minahan said.
