Friends and family of Peter Liang set up a legal defense fund on behalf of the former NYPD officer.
The 28-year old rookie cop was convicted of manslaughter earlier this month for the 2014 shooting death of Akai Gurley.
Community leaders gathered in Chinatown to announce an official trust fund in support of Liang.
Liang has received an outpouring of support from the city's Chinese community, who say he is being used as a scapegoat over police brutality.
An attorney for Liang's family says it's a hassle-free way for supporters to help with Liang's legal expenses.
"There's a lot of confusion out there, so people to make it absolutely clear this is the only sanctioned authorized — going forward — authorized trust fund for Peter's supporters to give their funds," said Gary Park. "We're creating this trust fund so he can focus on his legal battles while we can take care of his funds legally, while he's doing that."
Liang was patrolling a stairwell at the Pink Houses in East New York when he fired a bullet killing Gurley in November 2014.
He testified that his gun accidentally went off.
Liang is scheduled to be sentenced in April, and could spend up to 15 years behind bars.
His lawyers say they plan to appeal the ruling.
