Governor David Paterson put a year-long freeze on medical malpractice insurance rates for New York physicians.

The measure is part of the budget package he signed Thursday.

The bill is meant to relieve doctors who have been hit with sky-high premiums.

It will also suspend an anticipated surcharge until next June.

Paterson said the new legislation will give the state more time to find a long-term solution to the medical malpractice problem facing the state.

Lawmakers say without the freeze, some physicians would have seen a 30-percent hike in rates.
