A 78-year-old woman is in critical condition after being hit by a sanitation truck Thursday morning in Greenwich Village.

Officials say it happened just before 10 a.m.

The victim, Selma Chaikin, was operating a motorized wheelchair in the bike lane on 8th Avenue near Bleecker Street when she was hit.

Area residents say the woman crossed in front of the truck while it was stopped.

"She didn't cross the street she was just on this bicycle path. And apparently thought that the truck had stopped for a while and she probably thought she could drive around it but he must have pulled away without seeing her," said one witness.

The woman was taken to Saint Vincent's hospital with critical head injuries.

The truck driver stayed on the scene of the accident and has not been charged.
