The U.S. Navy has opened its newest warship, the USS New York, for public tours.

Visitors can meet the men and woman who serve aboard the ship and get a firsthand look at the equipment.

The ship is a tribute to the city, as seven tons of steel from the World Trade Center site was used to forge the ship's bow.

Visitors who spoke with NY1 said it is a great monument to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

"When we saw her come up, it made a closure for everything and for those friends and people we lost and things that happened," said veteran Edmund Squire. "And she's going to be a great ship and she's going to do a wonderful job."

"I spent 10 years at the World Trade Center and about eight years working here at the ship terminal before I retired," said George Bischer, a retired Port Authority policeman. "So I came back to see the ship, of course."

The USS New York will be officially commissioned on Saturday and will be docked at Pier 88 on Manhattan's West Side until next Thursday.
