Celebrity chef Rachel Ray is partnering with the city to create healthy lunches for local school children.
Ray was joined by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand at P.S. 89/I.S. 289 in Downtown Manhattan for the announcement Monday.
The Department of Education and Ray will spice up school lunches with healthy recipes in hopes of reducing childhood hunger and obesity.
"We're here to make the eating of good food not so painful. And to get kids excited about going home and trying to get their families interested in cooking," said Ray. "In order to end hunger and lower obesity rates, the schools are the only evening-out system that we have."
"The meals provided by Rachel... are going to not just be delicious, but they are going to teach every child who eats them that nutritious food is good for you and good-tasting," said Quinn.
Ray kicked off the program by serving up healthy recipes like Southwest roasted chicken and sizzling soft tacos.
