For many people, technology can be scary. And just like everything else, around Halloween it gets even more terrifying.

The Gravesend Inn is a high-tech haunted hotel in Brooklyn, built from the ground up each year by the faculty and students at the New York City College of Technology's Entertainment Technology Department.

It’s a department that teaches students how to design, build, and maintain attractions, like those you'd find at high-end theme parks.

“This is literally the same stuff they use at Disney,” says John Huntington of New York City College of Technology. “The software we use is the same they use. The attraction itself is run by the audience. There are sensors all over the haunted house and we sense where they are and through lots of programming, the attraction itself reacts to the people. So, when you go through, if there's no one in there, nothing's happening. If one group goes through, the show effectively follows them and that's what's very different, it's really interactive to the audience, rather than a clock that they have to synchronize themselves or it's just a bunch of people in there waiting to jump out and scare you.”

“So the animatronics are actually in their own world, that's a separate computer system that we talk to over the network. We have a lighting system — a fairly sophisticated one that's the same computer system you'd find on most big concert tours. The audio system· is also totally interactive. We have a video playback system for one of the effects we don't really want to give away, but inside the maze that's again a very sophisticated server-based system.”

There’s actually one more high-tech gotcha right at the very end. But I’ve been asked not to give away — at least not yet. Here's a hint though, remember, inside the Gravesend Inn, you're never really alone.

But, if you can't get to the inn and pay your $6 admission fee to find out, we have been given clearance to offer you an extra video segment spoiler to let you in on the secret. To watch the video, click here for hiband/loband.
