Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress is likely to face criminal charges in a Friday incident in which he shot himself in his his right leg.
Police say Burress accidentally shot himself in the right thigh at Manhattan’s Latin Quarter nightclub on Lexington Avenue.
His attorney told the Associated Press Sunday that he has been advised that Burress will be charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
The attorney also said that Burress will turn himself in to the authorities Monday morning and plead not guilty.
According to published reports, Burress told the club's security guards he carried the gun for protection and security waved him inside.
It is not clear exactly what happened next, but reports say Burress fumbled the gun and fired a shot into his thigh.
The Giants say Burress was released from a city hospital Saturday afternoon.
There are reports Burress has a concealed weapon permit from the state of Florida that expired in May. It would not have been recognized by New York State even if it was still in effect, so Burress could be charged with felony weapons possession.
The NFL also is likely to investigate whether Burress violated its personal conduct policy, which might lead to a suspension.
The Giants say they have been in contact with NFL security.
Burress was already set to miss Sunday's game in Washington, D.C. due to a hamstring injury.
He was suspended and fined by the Giants last month for missing a team meeting and also fined by the league for his conduct during a game.
