The federal government sets a safety limit for an industrial chemical found in infant formula.

After saying it could not set a safe threshold months ago, the Food and Drug Administration has set a limit of one part per million of melamine in formula as long as cyanuric acid, a related chemical, is not also present.

The FDA said studies show the combination of the two substances can produce dangerous health effects.

The limit is higher than the amount of melamine found in U.S. infant formula but much lower than the amount added to formula made in China.

The tainted Chinese formula is blamed for killing at least three babies and sickening thousands more.
