It was yet another dismal day on Wall Street Wednesday, as shaky investors wondered about the future of the big three auto makers.

Stocks took a sharp plunge, falling below the 8,000 mark for the first time since 2003.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 427 points at 7,997 – a loss of five percent.

The Nasdaq and S & P also took a nose dive.

Reports of stalled efforts to bail out the auto industry plus a worsening housing market fueled the sell off.
