Manhattan's West Side celebrated as the USS Intrepid reopened Saturday.
The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, housed in the World World II aircraft carrier, officially reopened at Pier 86 with a two-day celebration. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by musical performances, family activities and fireworks.
The aircraft carrier returned to Manhattan last month after being relocated for a two-year, $120 million renovation including new exhibits and aircraft.
Before renovations, the museum attracted about 700,000 visitors a year, and now organizers hoped to attract many more.
"We got a beautiful, brand new pier, you can walk underneath the British Airways Concorde, kids can come on and actually explore," said Intrepid Museum President Bill White. "We have simulators, and we have all kinds of interactive exhibits. You can go into places where you've never been before and we're so excited to welcome the Intrepid back to New York. I think everybody's missed her."
Hundreds came out in the rain and stood in a long line to see the 16 renovated aircrafts and new exhibits.
Kevin Brown and his sons were first in line.
"I come from a Navy family, a father, I was a career officer, commodore in the Navy, Destroyer Squadron 17 and the Golf of Tonkin, and so my kids just wanted to continue the family tradition," said Brown.
"I feel great, we finally got the lady back again, you know," said Joe Cobert, who served aboard the USS Intrepid. "And they did a number on her, did a real good number on her, refurbished her. You guys got to get down below and see what she looks like."
President George Bush is expected to board the Intrepid Tuesday to deliver a Veterans Day address.
