After another rollercoaster week on Wall Street, President George Bush again reassured the U.S. public Saturday that the economy will bounce back.
During his weekly radio address, the president said it will take time to feel the full impact of the government's rescue actions.
He said that open market policies should not be abandoned.
"Despite the ups and downs that our markets have experienced in recent months, the American people have reason for optimism in our nation's economic future,” said Bush. “Throughout our history, we have seen that when Americans are given the freedom to apply their talents and imagination, prosperity and success follow closely behind."
The address came a day after the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the week down 312 points, following a worldwide trend fueled by fears of a global recession.
