A patient who went to a city hospital for a simple exam claims she was held for hours for psychiatric tests, and she is now demanding an explanation. NY1’s Cheryl Wills filed the following exclusive report.

It was supposed to be a routine medical exam, but Keiko DesJardins said she was forced into Coney Island Hospital's psychiatric emergency room Monday morning without explanation.

"I came here for the GYN routine exam right? Yeah, but they forcefully took me to the psychiatric unit and wrote me up," said DesJardins.

DesJardins insists she does not have a history of mental illness. She said she was diagnosed with PMS 10 years ago and discussed her treatment for mood swings with the admissions nurse when she showed up for her gynecological tests.

But DesJardins claimed the nurse misunderstood and panicked.

"I came here for a GYN exam. I repeatedly explained but they didn't listen," said DesJardins.

DesJardins said despite fierce protests from herself and her husband, the staff did not listen to her at all.

In fact, she said a doctor made matters worse.

"The doctor says what are you here for? And I told her I'm here for the GYN exam and she told me, here you go. You have a psychiatric problem," said DesJardins. "This is a psych ER unit and you are talking about the GYN, Pap smear. You are insane."

Her husband, Matthew DesJardins, said he called the police, who refused to do anything.

"I asked them to please help me, they are detaining my wife against her will, they can't do this," said Matthew DesJardins. "The two cops just laughed at me and just walked out."

Desjardins said it was more than five hours before she was finally allowed to leave, after a round of physical and psychiatric tests.

She filed an immediate complain with the hospital, accusing the nurse of making an improper assessment.

Coney Island Hospital sent her a letter acknowledging her complaint, saying, "An investigation is currently being conducted" which should be completed by next week.

The hospital said it will let her know the findings and any resulting actions.

In a statement, Coney Island Hospital officials said, "There are many contradictions in the patient's allegations. While patient confidentiality laws preclude us from disclosing the patient's history or details about the services she received, we believe she was directed to the appropriate services based upon the patient's own disclosures to us at the time. We can confirm she was not restrained at any time."

Meantime, Keiko DesJardins said she is also going to file a complaint with the city Health and Hospitals Corporation.
