They said they came because they wanted to be a part of history and when the first African-American Democratic presidential nominee took to podium Thursday, that's exactly what people at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn experienced.

The speech came on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech given on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

“Which was a major turn of event and changed America in many ways,” said Medgar Evers College president Edison Jackson.

The audience at the college in Crown Heights stayed late, saying it meant a lot to them to watch Obama's speech together.

“He kinda represents the people – the normal guy,” said one audience member. “And what do you have in central Brooklyn? A lot of normal, regular people."

So how did he do? For this audience, at least, he did well, providing inspiration and getting voters excited about November.

“Black people are allowed to do things as long as they fight and they can achieve whatever they put their mind to do,” said one audience member.

“It was just a brilliant evening and his speech was the best,” added another. “He was serious, on focus and gave the people what they wanted to know."

“I thought he channeled Martin Luther King to a T, so I'm very satisfied,” added another.

“I wanted to see something that represents me for a change for my future,” added a third.
