The minivan driver involved in Monday's crash that killed two girls in Queens is now being charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Police say Sheila Bethea, 45, is also facing criminal possession of a controlled substance, assault and reckless endangerment.

According to police, crack residue was found on a crack pipe that was in Bethea's possession at the hospital.

Police say Bethea was driving a minivan with five young girls and a 43-year-old female passenger down Dunkirk Street in St. Albans just before 5 p.m. Monday, when she collided with another van driven by a 63-year-old man.

Prosecutors say Bethea, pictured right, was driving at 60 to 70 miles per hour.

Passengers Katherine Willis, 15, and Melissa Elh-Mirra, 5, were both killed in the collision. Three preteen girls, the other female passenger, and Bethea were hospitalized with injuries.

The Queens district attorney says at least one of the children was sitting on the floor of the van at the time of the crash.

"We're continuing our investigation because there are reports of drug use which have yet to be confirmed, but we've issued a search warrant for the hospital and for the blood that was taken from the defendant and we'll see if that tests positive for drug use," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Police say the crack pipe was not initially found on Bethea at the hospital, and that she may have smuggled the pipe in her buttocks.

All five girls in the car were foster children in the care of Bethea's mother.

Neighbors say they often saw the children playing in the yard and that Bethea kept to herself.

Bethea faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
