The U.S. Census bureau estimates that New York City had the largest population increase of any U.S. city in the last year - about 53,000 residents since July 2008.

New York also remains the country's most populous city, with an estimated 8.36 million residents, more than double the population of Los Angeles.

Census data also shows many of the country's urban areas are growing at faster rates than the rest of the nation, reversing a long-standing trend of migration to the suburbs.

Experts say the recession is likely making it too costly to move out of cities.

Overall, statistics show a specific resurgence in the northeast, midwest and coastal areas.
