Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and children from the Randall's Island Kids Summer Camp celebrated the opening of a new $16 million tennis center on Randall’s Island Tuesday.
The 20,000-square-feet public facility featuring 10 hard courts and 10 clay courts will officially open on July 6.
"There's never been anything like this in New York other than the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and this is really the equivalent of that facility is for the pros, this facility we hope will be that for everyone else," said Managing Partner, Sportime at Randall's Island Managing Partner Claude Okin.
"We already have the Icahn Track and Field Stadium, we've got 66 new sports fields in development, we've got great walking trails around the island, and now we have the best and most complete tennis center to be built in the last 30 years here in New York City," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
City parks permit holders can play for free.
