A Queens woman has been arrested in connection with the drowning death of an 11-month-old boy at a day care center.
Investigators say Krystal Khan, 28, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Police and paramedics responded Monday to a call at 108th Street in Ozone Park shortly before 11 a.m.
According to the Fire Department, the child, identified as James Daniel Farrior of Richmond Hill, fell head-first into a mop bucket.
EMS workers performed CPR en route to Jamaica Hospital, where the child later died.
"We never saw this problem here and all the neighborhood trusted them so much with their own kids and again, a tragedy happened today," said Ozone Park resident Billy Caceres.
"I didn't know it was a day care. This is the first time I saw I ever saw the sign up, I think they just opened up," said Ozone Park resident Marie Spiller.
"It could be a tragic accident, but how long could you have been away for the child to be in the bucket for that long," said neighbor Lisa Freitag. "My heart broke when I heard about this."
Freitag says she had visited the site to inquire about day care for her daughter just a few weeks ago.
"I asked her if she was licensed; she said no," recalled Freitag. "I'm a paramedic. I asked her if she knew CPR, she said no. She never had a chance to go take it. I told her my station was teaching CPR if she wanted to learn it. She could come by for free. She never took me up on the offer. Something told me not to go there and thank God I didn't."
The city Department of Health is investigating. An official there says the location is not a licensed or registered day care program but it may have been considered an informal care arrangement, which does not require a permit or license and is permitted by state law.
