This week's scholar athlete has been involved in gymnastics since kindergarten, and now he's ready to leap to college. NY1's Kevin Garrity filed the following report.

While Ben Antonie looks like a linebacker on the football team – he did at one point play that position for Long Island City High School – it's in the gymnasium where his real talents are displayed.

Besides maintaining an average in the high 90s, Antoine is the best male gymnast in New York City. He was recently awarded with the Wingate, which is handed out to the top senior athlete in every PSAL sport.

His leadership qualities, according to his coach, made him a perfect captain of the gymnastics team.

"His leadership, at least his athletic leadership, is all about doing the routine. That's gymnastics," says Coach Ken Achiron.

Besides football and gymnastics, Achiron has taken up lacrosse this spring, playing the sport for the first time.

"He just picked up a stick and I saw him play on the first day and I asked him if he played lacrosse before, and he said no," recalls Stephen Agresti, the school's football and lacrosse coach. "He's turned out to be one of the top scorers and assist guys in the city. Anything he touches is incredible."

Long hours and long rides to Westchester County as a young gymnast prepared the senior for his three-sport high school schedule.

"I did actually train in Bay Ridge but because there were so few boys, they had to shut the team down," he says. "So, I actually had to resort to going to Chappaqua, New York to do gymnastics and the practice was from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. so by the time I got home it was 10:30 p.m., 11 p.m. I was just exhausted."

"He has to juggle so many responsibilities but that's why he'll be remembered for such a long time and he leaves such a big impression with this teachers," says AP Government teacher Theodora Kapodistrias. "He is so talented but he understands that academics are still important."

Next year, Antoine will most likely head to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, although he's on the waiting list for Columbia University as well.

"I'd like to study electrical engineering," Antoine says. "Ever since I was young, I've always been fascinated with electronics, all the chips that went into it."

So for his three-sport excellence and an impressive academic resume, Ben Antonie is the Healthplus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.

The Health Plus/NY1 Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a $2,000 scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
