Lepore's Taste Turns Funky As Mendel Dives Into Luxury

Gilles Mendel's fall 2009 collection shows incredible craftsmanship as Nanette Lepore shows feminine and flirty creations. NY1's Jill Scott filed the following report.Impeccable, unpredictable and undeniably luxurious, Gilles Mendel outdoes himself when people think he can't get any better. For fall 2009, he is creating a strong, bold collection that blends hard and soft textures.
"I was very inspired by the classic shapes of the '60s but making my own interpretation, to give it a harder edge really for the modern woman of tomorrow," says Mendel.
Some designers buy textured fabrics, but Mendel artfully creates his own. The master cutter celebrates his craft by experimenting and perfecting various techniques to produces luxe fabrications
Hard leathers and heavy furs offset soft ethereal fabrics that glide ever so gently down the runway. The finishing details that are as accurate and delicate as the hands that creates them.
"I think he is just an extraordinary designer. I always feel so feminine and chic in his stuff. He has his unique take on things," says actor Kim Raver.
That unique take takes Mendel's collection to new heights.
Meanwhile, designer Nanette Lepore's fall 2009 collection creates the perfect game of dress-up, filled with mix-and-match pieces that are every girl's fantasy.
"It's sort of an eclectic woman and opulent magpie," says Lepore. "Someone who keeps her things, grows into her clothing, learns how to mix and match. And we all need a little escapism right now, so it's the idea of luxury and escapism."
This season, Lepore makes clothes that just make you feel good. A little flirty, a little funky, the outfits collect a lot of special things to create that perfect fantasy world. Plaids, paisley and pops of ribbon mix well with lush tweeds and lavish leather.
It's a stylish play of opposites - dark with light, delicate with daring - and asymmetrical hemlines that will have fans ready to ride her coat tails.
