The pool isn't just for fun and games this summer. NY1's Kafi Drexel recently got some tips from the experts at Men's Fitness Magazine on how to trade your regular gym for a water-filled workout this summer.
"Aqua training will help you to learn to use muscles you didn't know you had, and use muscles you haven't used in a long time. It really brings your core into it, it increases flexibility, there's no impact on your joints whatsoever, so you won't feel the kind of soreness and sometimes the damages you feel after a heavy weight training workout the next day," said Sean Hyson of Men's Fitness Magazine.
The equipment is pretty straight forward. You can strap on flotation devices for increasing drag in the water. There are also handheld buoys that look like oversized dumbbells.
Just by being in the water, you've already got the resistance. Bringing in the flotation device simply increases the challenge.
"When you add something like a hand-held buoy or a kickboard, this gives you some external resistance, just like a bench press adds resistance to a pushup type movement," said Hyson.
Because it is non-impact and easy on the joints, aqua training can be particularly good for older adults or for those getting over injuries. It can also help you get past exercise plateaus in the regular weight room.
"This is a great way to freshen up your workout. Try something different, and especially in the summertime, if you want to be with your friends around the pool, you know you're going to be at the pool anyway. It's just a way to take your workout there," said Hyson.
