It's getting easier to pay for big ticket trips, now that the layaway concept is taking off with travel.

An expedition cruise of Greenland is not one of those trips that you take on a lark. Because of its price and remoteness, you need some time to save up and savor the anticipation. This is one vacation that pays dividends with bragging rights, something I like to call a trophy trip.

With the option to make monthly, no interest payments on layaway, you can realize your once in a lifetime dream of visiting this cold country with a down payment of $99.

This is being made possible by the cruise line Hurtigruten, on board the MS Fram. It's a roundtrip cruise from Kangerlussuaq Fjord along the west coast of Greenland, including a charter flight from Copenhagen.

These cruises operate between June and September to take advantage of the relatively warm weather and the midnight sun.

The only thing you do have to look out for are the flies.

The Fram is an intimate sized ship that launches rubber boats to give you a front-seat to global warming. You will view more icebergs than you could ever dream of and watch as glaciers calve into the sea. Guided walking tours take in Inuit villages and towns with tongue-twisting names, and you can do a study on how sled dogs spend their summers.

When you book your layaway getaway by February 28, as an added bonus you will receive 25 percent off your cabin plus one free hotel night at both ends of the trip in Copenhagen. That's a reduction of nearly $2,000 with cabins starting at $4,600 per person.
