According to a study by the New York State Health Department, smokers are 76 percent more likely to quit if they live with children.

Experts say the health risks smoking poses to others can be a greater incentive to quit than the dangers it poses to smokers themselves.

Kids whose parents smoke around them can be more susceptible to respiratory infections, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Of the approximately 2.7 million smokers in New York State, about one million live with children.

The survey is being released this month to kick off the "Great American Smokeout," a national effort to encourage smokers to quit.

Those who want help kicking the habit are encouraged to call the state's Quit Line at 1-866-NY-QUITS or go to NYSmokeFree.com.
