Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was joined by women's advocacy groups Monday in Lower Manhattan to urge her fellow senators to move forward on the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The legislation would help empower women to negotiate equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts.

Gillibrand says equal pay for women will result in better economic growth all around.

"America's working families lose $200 billion every year as a result of the ongoing gender gap. That means $4,000 each year for every working family," said Gillibrand.

The National Committee on Pay Equity says working women stand to lose a quarter million dollars over the course of their careers because of unequal pay practices.
