Senator Hillary Clinton is joining President-elect Barack Obama in Chicago Monday, where she is expected to accept the nomination for secretary of state.
Starting at 10:40 a.m. tomorrow, NY1 will cover live the Chicago news conference where President-elect Barack Obama is expected to nominate Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.
Obama's camp says the president-elect will announce his national security team at a news conference.
Democratic officials say Obama will also ask current Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to stay on, and name retired Marine General James Jones as his national security advisor.
Obama is also said to name Susan Rice, who advised Obama on foreign policy during the campaign, as U.N. ambassador and Eric Holder as U.S. attorney general. Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will be named secretary of homeland security.
Clinton is the most high-profile nomination to the Obama cabinet thus far. Obama said the senator would bring instant stature and credibility to U.S. diplomatic relations.
As part of the vetting process, former President Bill Clinton agreed to disclose the list of contributors to his foundation by the end of this year and give an updated list every year his wife is secretary of state.
The former president also agreed to submit his speaking schedule for vetting by the State Department and White House Counsel, and to submit any new sources of income to similar ethics review.
Officials say he will also refuse contributions from foreign governments.
Indiana Senator Richard Lugar, a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the former president's agreements are suitable, and he would vote in favor of Hillary Clinton.
"Knowing what we have here on this program today, I suspect however, and I'm not alone in suggesting, there'll be questions raised, and probably legitimate questions," said Lugar.
Local officials say they could not be more thrilled that Clinton was selected.
"She not only has experience dealing with world leaders, having been first lady and now as a senator of New York, who's diversity is renowned," said Congressman Anthony Weiner. "She understands the nuances of these issues."
Weiner said Clinton is well equipped to handle global security challenges.
She faces a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan, nuclear-armed nations, and rebuilding America's image abroad.
Weiner says Clinton can hit the ground running.
"I think Barack Obama showed great wisdom in realizing, with the challenges of the economy, he needs someone dealing with world matters that he doesn't have to question their decision. Someone who he doesn't have to bring up to speed, who will be ready on day one," said Weiner. "That's certainly Hillary."
Once Hillary Clinton vacates her Senate seat, Governor David Paterson will name her replacement.
One of his concerns would be the timing of his decision and whether to make it before she's confirmed by her fellow senators next year.
"I'm reconsidering whether or not I should interfere with that natural process and name a successor, which is also almost forcing the process, or if I should just let it work itself out and make my selection then," said the governor.
Last week, Paterson said he would not name himself to the post. It has been speculated that the governor will pick a woman, Hispanic New Yorker or upstate politician to appease constituents, but he has not confirmed such rumors.
As Barack Obama prepares his administration, New Yorkers have until midnight Monday to sign up for a chance to attend the inauguration.
Senator Charles Schumer is holding an online lottery for his 350 tickets, open to anyone in the state.
Winners will be chosen on Friday.
Schumer hit on the idea after he was flooded with more than 100,000 requests.
New Yorkers can apply for up to two tickets at Schumer.senate.gov or by sending a fax to 1-202-228-3027.
