The New York Police Department is boosting its counterterrorism efforts at the city's bridges and tunnels.

The NYPD is installing radiation detectors inside three of its patrol cars stationed at entrances to bridges and tunnels. They will be used to search for dirty bombs and other nuclear threats.

The $450,000 devices were given to the NYPD by the Department of Homeland Security for free after the agency determined they were not strong enough to use at the nation's ports.
