A Staten Island woman was sentenced Thursday afternoon to 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting her fire marshal husband more than two years ago.

Janet Mercereau was found guilty in May of second-degree murder and received the maximum sentence.

Prosecutors claim Mercereau killed her husband Douglas on December 2, 2007 with his own gun as he slept in the family home.

Mercereau has maintained she had nothing to do with the shooting and did not hear the gunshots because she was sleeping with earplugs.

The victim's family members packed the St. George court room for the sentencing.

"It was very emotional, but the judge said things that were so pertinent to our family," said Betsy Gallo, Douglas Mercereau's sister. "The fact that he addressed her and her crime directly was really very satisfying for us, because we have not heard a word from her at any point ever since our brother was murdered."

Douglas Mercereau's brother Jim read the victim's impact statement.

"I don't think she could've won in that courtroom, amid anything," said defense attorney Mario Gallucci. "And I think his mind was completely made up before he walked into the courtroom. He's a very tough judge, and he gives very tough sentences."

Janet Mercereau's attorneys said they are planning an appeal.
