The man caught breaking into a police officer's car that eventually led to the deadly "friendly fire" shooting of the same officer was arraigned Tuesday.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office says Miguel Goitia is charged with criminal mischief, auto stripping, and attempt to commit petit larceny.

He's due back in court on September 16th.

Police say Goitia was rummaging through Officer Omar Edwards' car last month.

Edwards, who was in plainclothes, drew his gun and started chasing Goitia. Another officer, Andrew Dunton, spotted them.

Police say Edwards turned toward the officers with his gun still out, and was shot and killed by Dunton, who police say did not realize Edwards was a fellow officer.
