The City Council wants public schools to start observing Muslim holidays.

The council passed a nonbinding resolution asking the Department of Education to recognize the Festival of Sacrifice, the most important Islamic holiday, as well as the festival marking the end of Ramadan.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city is too diverse to observe every holiday.

A Columbia University study estimates at least 10 percent of the city's 1.1 million public school students are Muslim.
