Faulty adhesive is causing many New York vehicle registration and inspection stickers to fall off, leading to tickets and confusion among many drivers. NY1's Susan Jhun spoke with the Department of Motor Vehicles to find out how drivers can get themselves out of the sticky situation.

If the registration or inspection sticker on your car is peeling off, you're not alone.

"In this day and age, where we have incredible technology, we are stymied because of glue," said DMV Commissioner David J. Swarts.

The commissioner says that the glue on the 2010 New York registration and inspection stickers is not sticky enough, and the problem is affecting many drivers.

"It's frustrating to me personally because on my personal car the registration sticker is falling off," Swarts said. "On the DMV vehicles I see around, I see registration stickers that are coming off of the windshield."

It's seemingly a little annoyance that could end up costing you big.

"We have notified law enforcement to let them know that this is not the fault of the driver, the motorist," said the commissioner. "We told them that they should be lenient and perhaps consider not giving tickets. We believe that before magistrate court, if a person does get a ticket, that most of the judges will be lenient."

But the DMV cannot guarantee that. So to avoid hassle altogether, the agency is giving replacement stickers free of charge to drivers with defective seals.

As an alternative, the DMV says drivers can use clear tape to reaffix peeling registration or inspection stickers.

In the meantime, the agency has been working with the vendors of both stickers to address the problem.

For complete information on how to obtain new registration or inspection stickers, motorists should visit the DMV's website at nydmv.state.ny.us.
