Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the shooting of a former New York City Police Department cadet in the Bronx early Monday morning.
The shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. at 950 Avenue St. John in Longwood.
Police say the former cadet, identified as Thomas Rodriguez, was coming home when another man followed him into the entrance way of the building and shot him in the stomach. The suspect fled on foot.
Rodriguez, 23, is recovering at Lincoln Hospital.
One neighbor says he was awakened by the police activity.
"I'm surprised, yes," said a longtime Longwood resident. "It's usually quiet. This neighborhood is quiet, so I don't know what's going on."
Police are reviewing surveillance footage as they try to find the shooter.
According to neighbors, Rodriguez lives in the apartment with his mother.
Investigators say he was only in the cadet program for a short time.
