City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley introduced legislation Tuesday that would increase the penalty for drivers who leave their cars running while unattended.

Under the bill, the penalty for the violation would increase from $5 to $250.

Crowley made the announcement alongside the family of 16-year-old Robert Ogle who was killed last month, along with his friend, 20-year-old Alex Paul, when they were hit by an alleged drunk driver in Middle Village.

"People must realize that it's not only irresponsible, it's very dangerous and it could be a deadly situation," said Crowley.

Police say 27-year-old Kenneth Guyear stole a car, drove drunk and ran them down. They say the car he stole was left outside a nearby deli after the owner left it running.

Guyear was charged with manslaughter and DWI and faces up to 25 years in prison.
