Coney Island started off its unique July 4th holiday celebrations with the first-ever cross-species eating competition Friday.

Three Asian elephants, seen above, took on three Nathan's hot dog competitors to see which team could eat the most hot dog buns in six minutes.

Bunny, Susie and Minnie were the champion pachyderms, eating a combined 505 buns to the humans' 143 buns.

"We probably got about five dozen down apiece, but the elephants, you know, they're just massive," said competitor Eric "Badlands" Booker. "In one whole swoop they get about one or two dozen. You know, we can't compete with that."

"I eat 10 percent of my body weight. They only eat three percent of their body weight, so I am the real winner," said competitor Juliet Lee.

The contest came one day ahead of the Super Bowl of competitive eating, the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Joey Chestnut, who will try to hold onto his title, won last year by eating a record 64 frankfurters, after the competition went into over time.

The competition starts at noon Saturday.
