Coney Island in Brooklyn is again playing host this July 4th weekend to the Association for Volleyball Professionals.

The tournament at 21st Street and Surf Avenue featured 32 men's teams and 32 women's professional volleyball teams competing for prize money.

Many players were pleased with visiting the city's most famous beach, which was the eighth stop of the tournament's 16-city tour.

"I like it. It's got a nice boardwalk," said player Larry Witt. "It's really different from what we have on the west coast. It's great. Maybe I'll try some Nathan's hot dogs."

"The sand is a little shallower here, makes things a little easier. People can attack the ball," said player Larissa Mereszczak.

"It's unique, there's no beach like it in the country," said AVP spokesperson Alison Shapiro. "It's historic, it's interesting, it's a really different feel on the east coast beach communities than the west coast. So it's fun to see how something like this plays out against this backdrop."

Spectators enjoyed Friday's free semifinalist games as well.

"Coney Island really has the right venue as far as size-wise," said spectator Joe Bromfield. "A lot of the other beaches in the city are too small, you really have the room to put up a facility like this."

"You're out here on the beach, girls in bikinis, guys playing volleyball, you got food. What else could you want?" said another spectator.

Saturday is the women's championship and Sunday is the men's final game.
